Pop Art
Pop art is an art movement that began
in the 1950’s in Britain. When it was first used it was used to show that
America culture was powerful, now it as used to show irony and parody. Pop art
includes images from popular culture like celebrities, advertisements, news and
brands. It is aimed to use popular culture rather than elite culture. The concept
of pop art is less about the art itself, but more about the attitudes expressed
in it. The attitudes that are often used in pop art are difficult to understand.
A lot of pop art is used for advertising, especially on product labeling and
logos. Pop art is considered to be an art movement that is a type of postmodern
art.
Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa is a half portrait of an Italian woman, painted
by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting is thought to be a portrait of Lisa
Gherardini. The name Mona Lisa was given to the painting by Giorgio Vasari when
he wrote that the painting was of Mona (meaning Madam) Lisa. It is an oil
painting on a poplar panel and is believed to be painted from 1503 to 1506. It
is now property of the French Republic and is on display at Musee du Louvre in
Paris since 1797. On the 21st of August 1911 the Mona Lisa was
stolen from the museum. 2 years later Vincenzo Peruggia was arrested for
stealing the painting. He stole it because he believed the painting should have
been returned to Italy and been put on display in an Italian museum. In 1956
the lower half of the painting had been badly damaged when a vandal threw acid
at it and later that year someone threw a rock at it resulting in the loss of a
speck on the left elbow, which was later painted over. Leonardo da Vinci used a
pyramid design to place the women in the space of the painting.
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15th, 1452 in
Italy and died on May 2nd, 1915 in France. He was a painter,
sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist,
geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer. He is more importantly known for
his artwork and his scientific discoveries. He designed a helicopter, a tank,
concentrated solar power, a calculator and the double hull. Some of his famous
artworks are; Mona Lisa, The last Supper, The Vitruvian Man and Lady With an
Ermine.
